"Cybersecurity" is a popular buzz word right in business right now, but a lot of people I speak to have misconceptions about what it actually means. Firewalls, anti-virus, password safes, encryption, multi-factor authentication, penetration testing - cybersecurity is none of those things. It is also definitely not "the cloud".
Cybersecurity is the business function that protects your business systems - IT or otherwise - from threats that seek to do them harm. Whether it's cyber-criminals from the Internet, or Bill the disgruntled guy from the sales team, the threats are real, and they are multiplying rapidly.
For any modern business, suffering data breach is really just a matter of time. The key to survival is being able to tell when it has happened, limit the scope of impact, and respond quickly and effectively. Being caught off guard by a data breach is the digital equivalent of an earthquakes - it can cripple a business beyond recovery in a matter of minutes.
For start-ups and SMBs, the risks are amplified significantly. Big Business has invested heavily in cybersecurity, driving up salaries and driving off cyber-criminals. Meanwhile SMBs struggle to access the skills they need to protect themselves adequately, making them much more attractive targets.
Shogun Cybersecurity aims to address this imbalance, helping startups and SMBs get started on their cybersecurity journey, and build capability in their business to address cyber-risk on a daily basis. Because, as we say in the industry so often, cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility.
